Design a Web Album Using Adobe Photoshop- Part 2

 by: Robert Kennedy

So let’s begin crunching down these 300 images using Adobe Photoshop from start to finish. When I say ‘crunching’, to some 300 images may seem like allot, but it’s not. I have done jobs for clients that have 100,000 plus images. When you have that many images to produce there are other programs I use that are designed for this. We’ll cover that another day.

To this point we have ensured that our images are web ready, cropping, retouching, watermarking, etc. So let’s get at it. I will assume that we are all using Adobe Photoshop version 6 or greater.

First we will go to the ‘file’ menu and select ‘Automate” shown here http://weprintcolors.com/screens/screen_dw_create_photo_menu.htm. Now you are ready to create the theme of your photo album by filling in the required textfields. Remember to be as brief and descriptive as possible, as this information gets published on all html pages generated by Photoshop. This is where Photoshop is seems to offer more that Dreamweaver. You will notice the first pull down menu ‘styles’. There are many different horizontal and vertical styles available. The second menu allows you to enter an email address that you may want to be available to your visitors. However, I advise against it. Remember that thing called SPAM. Then next pull down menu allows you to specify .htm or .html extensions. Now we’ll click the ‘browse’ button and locate your image source folder. Click the ‘destination’ folder. This folder should be located somewhere in you website folder. If you don’t have one, make one. ‘Options’ is, again an area that Adobe seems far more thorough that Dreamweaver. The ‘options’ menu let’s you specify every aspect of your photo album…size of small thumbnails, size of large thumbnails, add custom colors to better tie into your corporate scheme. Remember to complete the ‘site name’, ‘photographer’, textfields tactfully; this is what tells the search engine what your subject matter deals with.

Are you ready now? Go ahead click OK. Like magic your photo album manufacturing itself. This is a great tool that can be used commercially or just for fun. Create commercial product pages for your clients or create an online photo album for family and friends in minutes.

Working at home may be your dream, but you still need to avoid distractions in your home based business in order to be successful.  Making a living doing what you love is appealing, and working out of your home can be a relief from the daily grind most corporate workers experience.  You can sent many of your own hours, avoid rush hour traffic, and be your own boss.  But keeping your business on track also requires focus and a need to avoid distractions in your home based business.

So how do you avoid distractions in your home based business?  First, you need to decide on your regular work hours.  By setting your hours and sticking to them, you not only will avoid those distractions, but you will also avoid burnout.  Set hours create an atmosphere of work, which is also influenced by where you have your office.  You can avoid distractions in your home based business by finding space that is away from high-traffic areas and offers some quiet place to work.

Scheduling time for play throughout your day can help you avoid distractions in your home based business.  If you are someone who is easily drawn away, then schedule a siesta in your daily plan.  Make sure you stick to the schedule and get back to work even more focused than before.

Another way to avoid distractions in your home based business is to restrict your television, internet, and other media use during your work hours.  It can be easy to pull your phone and laptop in front of the television set while you work, but it will not make you very productive.  The internet can be a useful work tool, but it can also lure you away from your focus.

One of the greatest aspects to working at home is being able to spend a lot of time with your family.  However, your family can sometimes make it very hard to avoid distractions in your home based business.  It is important for you to sit down and set limits with family members so that they know your schedule and respect your office space and work time.

Taking some time to become more disciplined in your work can help you avoid distractions in your home based business making you more productive and your business more profitable.  Even though working at home can be more freeing and allow you to be more flexible, the key to success is finding ways to stay focus and to avoid distractions in your home based business.

Reality about Article Exchange, by: Rich Brunelle

I recently read an article regarding websites and considerations writers should take when selecting sites to submit their written works to. And, as I believe that a good deal of the Internet Community accepts most of the information they read from such articles to be truthful and correct, a little additional information need be presented.

Article Exchanges are web sites where professionals (in their field) can submit articles about topics they are knowledgeable of, so that the Internet Public may download and reprint or publish to their web site the article as free content. One of the expectations is that the article will be published to numerous web sites creating both linkage for search engines to spider and promotion of the writers web site, business, or product.

Most of the sites that serve as Article Exchange sites advice writers that their written works are being made available for FREE download and reprint/republish by the Internet Community as FREE Content. Some further advise writers that if they charge a fee or do not wish their work distributed as FREE Content, not to submit their work to their site.

There are sites that you can post your unpublished manuscript and expect your copyright to be respected. And, there are sites where you know your copyright will get instantly abused. An Article Exchange site kind of lies middle ground. The writer expects their work to get used by others, so the writer grants reprint/republish rights to the user. An Article Exchange site is not the place for a professional writer to publish their work. Although there are some that do on occasion.

The best expectation for respect for copyrights is a site that specifies one time reprint/republish rights. In other words, the user may publish the writer’s article one time, to any media. But, the user may not publish it to multiple print media such as books or magazines. However, this would only be of concern to the professional writer, because any other writer submitting his article to an Article Exchange hopes and prays that their article gets the widest and farthest distribution possible.

That raises another issue from the article written by the writer that prompted this article. That writer spoke of a selection process for what sites to submit articles to. This only applies to Professional Writers. It does not apply to Professionals that write and submit their work to Article Exchanges as a means of web site promotion. “Professionals that write” want their articles to be reprinted everywhere, even if they have to do it themselves. Each reprint read is a prospective visitor to their site, a link for a search engine, and an online atta-boy by those that use it.

In closingHealth Fitness Articles, I note that some of my favorite Article Exchanges advise Users to contact the writer for reprint permission. I have spent hours trying to ascertain how to contact most of the writers whose work I have used. No writer should expect to be contacted regarding reprint rights of articles from Article Exchanges if they don’t affix a contact method to their article. Failure to provide such information is indicative of the writers release of obligation for such contact.

sit with Adam Soroca, a Representative from Terra Lycos

A Glimpse into the Lycos Search Engine. . .

A Visit with Adam Soroca, a Representative From Terra Lycos

By Robin Nobles

Recently, the Academy of Web Specialists (http://www.onlinewebtraining.com) had the good fortune of having Adam Soroca, a representative from Terra Lycos (http://www.lycos.com), attend a chat session to visit with our students. Mr. Soroca provided some excellent information about Terra Lycos as well as their plans for the future.

As means of introduction, Adam is the Group Product Manager for Lycos InSite and is in charge of building a comprehensive suite of search marketing tools. He has general management responsibilities for the vision, execution, and delivery of the Web-based platforms.

Adam explained further,

“I am charged with building a search marketing platform for Lycos. We launched our first product based on paid inclusion into the FAST Web index in February of this year. We were very quickly able to prove that by nature of our brand and presence, search marketers would come to visit for search marketing services.

“Two weeks ago, we launched our second product, InSite AdBuyer, a cost-per-click ad auction engine. Both of these products are designed around the concept of contextual advertising, so that a searcher is presented with highly relevant information when performing a search.

“While our platform is currently focused on our own index, we seek to provide one-stop access for all search marketing needs, including multiple index submission and multiple bid-management capabilities. All of these are designed to drive traffic (i.e., customer acquisition). We are also looking further down the visitor experience to the ROI side to encompass campaign management.”

The following are questions asked by Academy students to Mr. Soroca.

Question: “I see when I do a search on Lycos that there is an ‘advertisement’ on the right side. Is this the InSite AdBuyer?”

Adam: “Correct. Those are the AdBuyer cost-per-click ads. Our advertisers bid to be in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd positions.

“These are highly targeted ads as they are exact match keyword driven. So behind the scenes, advertisers are involved in a bidding auction to vie for that space.”

Question: “When someone clicks the ‘place your ad here’ link, does it show what the bids are for the keywords in question, so you know what you have to bid against?”

Adam: “No, actually we don’t display the prices on the front end. To view the prices for particular keywords, advertisers must sign up for an account and view that in the advertisers’ area.”

Question: “What results does FAST supply to Lycos?”

Adam: “FAST currently provides Lycos with our search results. Our paid inclusion platform enables Web site owners and marketers to guarantee that their Web content is included in the Web index and frequently refreshed. This differs from paid placement in that the paid inclusion customers do not necessarily show up in the top of the results just because they paid us. This content is viewed by the relevancy algorithm and displayed appropriately.

“Currently this program is available to small/mid size companies for an annual subscription. For larger companies, it will be available at a cost-per-click (those sites >1,000 URL’s). Paid placement and paid inclusion are two separate products. If you bid for placement, you pay for actual clicks. If you buy paid inclusion, that means that your pages are guaranteed to be in the Web index (spiders can’t find everything), and the content will be updated every 24-48 hours. So, if your content changes, the index will reflect that much more quickly. With an index of 2.1 billion documents, it can take FAST a while to recrawl the entire index. This program guarantees you are in there.”

Question: “So, you have to pay for inclusion before you bid for placement? Is this what I understand?”

Adam: “They are two separate programs. The paid inclusion relates to FAST and the Web index. The paid placement relates to the three ad panels that display on Lycos Search.”

Question: “And your placement number in Lycos is then based on the algorithm of the page submitted?”

Adam: “Correct!”

Question: “Where the paid placement is a cost per click, your placement is then based on the bid placed for a particular keyword?”

Adam: “Yes, exactly.”

Question: “If you aren’t indexed and would like to buy pay per click, where would the cost per click be linked to?”

Adam: “The cost-per-click ads go to any page that you want provided that you have content that is relevant to the keyword that you bid on. The cost-per-click ads are completely separate from the index. You do not have to be in the index to bid on the ads. The ads are the ‘advertisement’ on the right hand side of the page.”

Question: “We are talking about cost per click (ad placement) and paid inclusion. My question is, if you don’t pay for inclusion and pay for ad placement, would you be indexed with FAST or Lycos search engines?”

Adam: “No, they’re completely independent. Paid inclusion gets you into the Web index. Paid placement buys you space on the Web results page. You can have either or both, but they do not work together per se. However, it helps to purchase both for broad exposure through paid inclusion and targeted exposure through the CPC ads.”

Question: “In your new InSite AdBuyer program, FindWhat provides the technology but NOT the results for your pay-per-click ads, is that correct?”

Adam: “We have private labeled the FindWhat ad auction platform end-to-end. Lycos engages in relationships with the advertisers directly.”

Question: “Where are the sponsored listings from?”

Adam: “Those are provided by Overture, which is similar in concept. Advertisers are bidding for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions throughout Overture’s network.”

Question: “What is the purpose of the “Fast Forward” button in your search results? I notice that using the button opens up a framed page where the left frame shows the search results including Overture ads, and the current site is highlighted. Does this button make it easier to visit the current results, and is that its purpose?”

Adam: “That is exactly the purpose. We are trying to give the searchers an easier way to browse through the pages that are served as results.”

Question: “Is it necessary to submit to both FAST and Lycos, either through free Add URL or pay inclusion, or does submitting to FAST get your site listed in both indexes?”

Adam: “Web site owners and marketers can submit to the FAST index either through Lycos or directly to FAST. There is no difference in the indexes. Lycos search results are powered by FAST.”

Question: “Does the #1 result from Kanoodle still show up in some Lycos searches?”

Adam: “No. Kanoodle does not provide results on Lycos.”

Question: “Are the results from the Lycos Web Sites Directory (ODP results) mixed in with the FAST results or only available through the Web Directory link at the top of the page?”

Adam: “Only FAST results appear in the Web result listings.”

In Conclusion

If you don’t have visibility in the Lycos search engine (http://www.lycos.com), you have several choices. You can pay for inclusion in the FAST index (http://www.positiontech.com/fast/index.htm), which will get you in the regular search results for Lycos. You can also participate in their InSite AdBuyer program (http://insite.lycos.com/searchservices/), a new cost-per-click advertising program. Or, purchase keywords through Overture (http://www.overture.com), which will also get you visibility in Lycos.

At the top of the Lycos page, you’ll see a link to the Web Directory, which is where ODP results are found. ODP results can only be found through this link, and they’re not mixed in with the FAST results. However, making sure that your site is listed in the ODP (http://dmoz.org) is another way to get added visibility through the Lycos search engine.

Design Web Album and Deployment Using Adobe and Macromedia- Part 1

 by: Robert Kennedy

OK, here is my mission; completely install a customer example photo gallery found here http://www.cardprinting.net/ in 2 hours or less. The basic process starts from Adobe Illustrator CS or Corel Draw 12. This is the format all customers’ work is saved in. There are aproximately. 300 files I need to access export and create a photo album with full navigation.

Here’s how I did it. Instead of opening each file in its native program I tried opening CDR and AI files in Adobe Photoshop. Guess what? It works with the ai files but not the cdr files. Why is this important? Because 90% of my files are in ai format! Illustrator only allows you to open 1 file at a time, Photoshop allows you to open as many as your computer’s resources can handle. At the same time Photoshop converts each vector based image to a bitmap, which is required for the web. Now, you could create a course of ‘actions’ to complete this more efficiently, but I want to remove or retouch some undesirable from each image. I am a ‘perfectionist’ so I want these images looken good AND loading fast for the web. Personally I find Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Fireworks offer the best export filters for the web.

So now I have 300 images looken good, properly cropped and optimized for the web. What is the best way to create a Photo Album from so many images? Again let’s refer to my favorites for this, Macro Media or Adobe? I work with both for different projects and really can’t pick a favorite here! They are both excellent for this. Macromedia Dreamweaver has a function found under commands>create photo album, shown here http://www.weprintcolors.com/screens/screen_dw_create_photo.htm. You will need Fireworks installed for this to work. Go ahead and fill in all the text fields that are required information shown here http://www.weprintcolors.com/screens/screen_dw_create_photo_menu.htm. It is important you take the time to craft your words carefully, especially in the first field as this text is written into every html file generated. Check the appropriate format, rows and columns etc. Check the box for file names on or off and check the box for, ‘create navigation page for each photo’. OK that’s it you’re ready to fire away, click OK. Amazing, eh?

Well I am kind of busy right now working on my next project. In my next post I will talk about the same process of creating a web based photo album using adobe photo shop for the entire process.

Cheers,

Robert

April 15th looms in front of most people every year like a big, full moon full influencing a tax based frenzy, but knowing where to find tax breaks for your home based business can make that frenzy a little less frantic and more beneficial to you and your home based business.  Finding tax breaks for your home based business is not overly difficult, but make sure you discuss tax breaks for your home based business with the person doing your taxes.

A great way to find those tax breaks for your home based business is to get information from your local municipality as to what fees you will have to pay and what the available tax breaks for your home based business are available.  They may even be able to tell you what forms are required from the state in order to make sure you get tax breaks for your home based business rather than fines for not filing the right paperwork.  Understand that to optimize the tax breaks for your home based business, you should make sure you are structuring your business in the best way.  Filing your business as a sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation can have a definite influence on the tax breaks for your home based business.  The Department of Revenue should be able to offer you more information on how to file, along with fees and available tax breaks for your home based business.

Understand, too, that working for yourself may not just be about tax breaks for your home based business.  There are taxes that your will have to pay, like employment taxes, federal income taxes, and social security taxes that are required, although there are many tax breaks for your home based business that can offset some of these taxes you will have to pay.

In most cases, there are tax breaks for your home based business that are just like those available for regular businesses.  Tax breaks for your home based business will allow you to deduct thousands of dollars in household items.  For instance one common area of tax breaks for your home based business includes automotive expenses.  By deducting your mileage, car payment, and automotive maintenance fees, you are getting one of many tax breaks on your home based business.  Other tax breaks for your home based business can include travel expenses, computer and office supplies, a portion of your home’s property taxes, entertainment expenses, and even health insurance expenses.

Yahoo Listing Still Worth It?

 by: Dan Thies

In October 2002, the Yahoo! portal changed the way it delivers search results. In the past, the most prominent results were exclusively culled from websites listed in the Yahoo directory itself. Since October, sites listed in the Yahoo directory no longer enjoy this privileged status.

The Google search engine now drives the primary search results on Yahoo. While this is certainly an improvement for users of Yahoo search, it’s a disaster for many businesses that counted on their Yahoo listing to deliver substantial traffic.

This change has also led many site owners to question the value of a listing in the Yahoo directory. In this article, I will outline the pros and cons of maintaining, or paying for, a Yahoo listing. In the process, I will delve into more details of the recent changes.

Argument #1: Yahoo Listings Mean Link Popularity

Pro: Even if the Yahoo listing itself delivers little or no traffic, other search engines will rank your website higher if it’s listed in Yahoo. Because Yahoo is so important, a link from Yahoo counts more than a regular link. Thanks to its higher “PageRank,” Yahoo means even more to Google.

Con: Yahoo listings do not deliver nearly as significant a contribution in this area as you might think. You can verify this by doing a “backward links” search on Google for any Yahoo-listed website. The most important links are listed first, and the Yahoo listing is rarely even on the first page of links for top ranked sites on Google.

Argument #2: Listed Sites Look Better In The Search Results

Pro: Websites with a Yahoo listing show up in the combined Yahoo/Google results with their title, description, and category from the Yahoo directory. This may boost the response when the site appears in the search results. This applies when the URL listed in the results is the same as the URL in the Yahoo listing.

Con: Results listed with Yahoo information include a link to the site’s category, which may prompt surfers to pass over your listing and go to the category. Sites without Yahoo listings have the more inviting “search within this site” link, which leads to more results exclusively from your site.

So, Is A Yahoo Listing Worth It?

If you have a non-commercial site and can get listed for free, of course! If you’re not one of the lucky few, though, you have to evaluate whether it’s worth $299 a year for what amounts to a better than average incoming link. Everyone must make their own decision. If $299 is small compared to your total marketing budget, it may be easier to just continue paying. My own listing expires in March, and I don’t intend to renew it.

How Can You Profit From The Changes At Yahoo?

The obvious answer is that you must take steps to improve your own position in Google’s search results. Google’s rankings are made up of many factors, but the dominant factor is “PageRank,” which is based on the number and quality of incoming links from other websites.

Therefore, the first step in improving your position on the Google search engine (and now Yahoo) is to improve your site’s link popularity. This takes time, and trying to take shortcuts can get you into real trouble - Google doesn’t like “link farms,” or any program designed to artificially boost your link popularity.

Finding Quality Link Partners Through Google

Since only links from quality sites will count for much with Google, let’s take a quick look at how you can find these sites. Start by targeting the sites that link to existing top-ranked sites. You can do a backward links search for any site by typing “link:http://www.domain.com” in the Google search engine.

An even faster method is to use the Google toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/), which requires Internet Explorer 5 or greater, running on Windows. With the toolbar’s advanced features enabled, you can conduct a “backward links” search from the “Page Info” menu for any site you visit.

Since Google lists these results in descending order by “PageRank,” you can quickly determine the best places to get links by doing backward links searches on the top 10-20 sites for your desired search terms, and seeking links from the top 10-20 places that link to them.

Links Are Not Enough: Optimizing For Google

While “PageRank” is the dominant factor in Google’s algorithm, it’s not the only factor, and you still need to optimize your web pages. This can be a complicated topic, but the most important factors are:

  • Keywords in the title of the page
  • Keywords in headings on the page (H1 or H2 tags), especially the first heading.
  • Keywords in the body text of the page, particularly the first paragraph.

Don’t Complain, Act!

By some estimates, Google now controls 2/3rds of the searches conducted on the Internet in a given day. Not only is Google.com extremely popular in its own right, but Google also controls the search results on popular portals like AOL and Iwon.com - not to mention Yahoo.

A lot of website owners are complaining bitterly about this change. All the more reason for you to take action now, while so many of your competitors are busy licking their wounds. With a little planning and effort, you could be in a dominant position on Google before they even get started.

I wish you success…

Simple Graphic Design

 by: Robert Kennedy

THE TIRES ARE TURNING BUT YOU ARE GOING NO WHERE

Sound like a familiar story?

So you’ve got a great concept or idea but you just can’t seem to get it down. You have been working on your computer for hours, days, weeks but just can’t seem to accomplish anything concrete.

STOP. Think about it! How can you realistically create an effective graphic design if you don’t know what you are trying to create? Take a breather and think about what I am about to suggest to you. Let’s suppose for a minute you want to open an importing company that will sell ‘Red Shoes from China’. Fire up your browser and Google this term. Learn what you can about manufacturers, distributors and competition. Now you have something to go on. Try to quickly digest and figure out how you can make all of this information work for you.

Now let’s start to design your company’s corporate ID. I know you really want to get critical design project completed now, but a wise man once said to me ‘Slow down you’ll go faster’ here are a few links worth checking out before we begin your design:

Learn about color and how it affects your mood:

http://www.weprintcolor.com/moodofcolour.htm

Color Mood Test, Spot Color and CMYK:

http://www.weprintcolor.com/usingcolour2.htm

Pantone in RGB and html:

http://www.weprintcolor.com/pantone_RGB_convert.htm

OK, now you have a mental picture in your mind, look, feel, type paper you want to print on. What colors shall I use? What typography (fonts) should I go with? What graphic message am I trying to communicate? These are the basic questions you need to address before you can begin your graphic design.

Here is an idea for you, in the infancy stage of creating your great concept, pickup a pencil and piece of paper and sketch your ideas before you go near your computer.

Programs like Corel Draw, Adobe Photo Shop, Quark Xpress, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Pagemaker, etc. are the greatest programs for designers on the market. But these great desktop publishing programs need to be told what you want, they cannot conceptualize. These programs cannot dream for you. So it really does come down to you, your pencil and paper as any graphic designer will tell you… conceptualize, sketch, render, create.

Follow these steps for all of your creative graphic designs. Whether you’re designing a colorful website, a full color multi panel brochure, an annual report, an NCR form, a power point presentation, a full color business card or stationery, keep these guidelines in mind you’ll find you start getting better mileage on one set of tires.
